My name is Markus and I’m the Course Director at Joe’s Gone Diving which basically means that I’m mainly teaching people how to become Open Water Scuba Instructors and PADI Divemasters, the road however until here was long.
I grew up in a small mountain village in Austria and until the age of 12 the main source of water I knew was frozen. My first diving experience was with my dad on a holiday in Mauritius, Africa. I couldn’t understand the instructor so the experienced wasn’t as pleasant, but the fish I saw and the loss of gravity got me hooked.
After my training and education in Hospitality in 2007, a holiday of 8 months brought me to Mexico. The months went by and the more people I was meeting, everyone was talking about diving so I took my courage in both hands and did my Open Water course in a little village close to Belize. My original plan was to travel all the way down to Panama, but I got hooked by blowing bubbles.
Working mainly abroad in the summers to come, I always had some spare days to dive in different locations of the world. On that list you can find amazing places like Egypt, several Islands in the Caribbean, Austria, Switzerland, Pacific and Atlantic side of Mexico to Thailand. I always wanted to see new places and do different things. I also did my Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver including several Specialties in those areas until I was completely hooked and already thinking about becoming a professional in diving.
In 2013 I had enough of the busy lifestyle in the Hospitality industry and I bought my one-way ticket to Bali. Here I became a PADI Divemaster and Instructor. After a couple of months gaining experience, I started working at Joe’s Gone Diving. Throughout the years, I was fascinated by the bio diversity, I haven’t seen that many different fish and critters anywhere else in the world. Not only that, here in Sanur you are in the center to access great wreck, deep, drift and muck diving. There is also a mix of macro up to big fish like the famous „Mola ramseiy” Sharks and Turtles.
My favorite dive sites on Bali are Tepekong in Candidasa and the Kubu Wreck, as I love cave and wreck diving and everything what goes into a technical aspect of diving.
I love my job! It is demanding in a way, having so many new professionals striving to become better and asking for more information and sometimes leaving the dive center when it’s dark, but there is nothing more rewarding seeing all those new diving professionals after their IDC or Divemaster exams and hearing about their stories and seeing them grow within the industry.
In the end my passion is diving itself as there is not a more pristine place on earth than underwater. Feeling the gravity loss while floating in mid water and blowing bubbles makes me forget all the troubles in the world.
So, if you want to become a PADI Professional I will most likely see you around on Bali.
